Core problem awareness

Why does my website rank #1 on Google but never appear in ChatGPT?

Google rankings and AI citations measure different things. Research by Authoritas found the overlap between Google's top 10 results and AI citations dropped from 70% to under 20%. Google ranks based on backlinks and domain authority. AI engines cite based on content structure, factual density, and extractability.

You can dominate Google and be completely invisible in ChatGPT because the optimization requirements are fundamentally different.

How much of the buying journey now happens inside AI tools?

73% of B2B buyers use AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity during vendor research, according to HG Insights' 2025 analysis of 680 million citations. For B2B software specifically, 51% of buyers begin their purchasing process in an AI chatbot rather than Google (G2, March 2026).

Forrester found 61% of the B2B buying journey completes before vendor contact. Invisible in AI means excluded from consideration.

What happens when customers research in ChatGPT instead of Google?

93% of AI search sessions end without a website visit, according to SparkToro's 2025 research. When buyers research in ChatGPT or Perplexity, they receive synthesized answers with citations. If your brand is not cited, you are invisible during the research phase.

For B2B suppliers, this means procurement managers shortlist vendors without visiting your site. For D2C brands, buyers form purchase intent without discovering your product exists.

Is GEO just a trend or a permanent shift in how search works?

ChatGPT processes 2.5 billion prompts daily. AI-referred traffic to retail sites increased 805% year over year during Black Friday 2025 (Bluefish and Adobe Analytics). The GEO market is projected to grow from $850 million in 2025 to $33.7 billion by 2034, a 50% compound annual growth rate.

This is infrastructure change, not experimental adoption. The question is not whether to invest in GEO, but how quickly you can build visibility while competitive density remains low.

What is GEO

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is optimizing your digital presence so AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini cite your brand in their generated responses. Unlike SEO, which optimizes for rankings in a list, GEO optimizes for being selected and cited within the answer itself.

This requires structured content, demonstrated expertise through data, cross-platform authority, and making your brand information easy for AI systems to discover, understand, and trust.

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO optimizes for rankings in search results. GEO optimizes for citations within AI-generated answers. SEO measures success through rankings and organic traffic. GEO measures citation frequency and brand mentions in AI responses.

Research shows AI-referred traffic converts at 2 to 5 times the rate of organic search, but requires different optimization: structured data, direct answers, and quotable statements versus traditional keyword targeting.

Sources: Washington Post & Conductor
What is the difference between GEO and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

The terms are functionally synonymous. AEO emerged first, focused on optimizing for featured snippets and Google's direct answer features. GEO emerged as AI chatbots became mainstream, emphasizing citations in LLM-generated responses.

Some practitioners distinguish between short extractable answers (AEO) and comprehensive authority (GEO), but the tactics overlap almost completely. The underlying optimization principles remain the same regardless of terminology.

How do AI engines decide what to cite?

AI engines retrieve relevant sources through web search, then evaluate based on relevance, recency, authority, and trust signals. They extract passages that directly answer questions and synthesize them into responses with citations.

Content structured with clear headings, direct statements early, demonstrated expertise through data, and authoritative domain sourcing has the highest citation probability. Extractability matters more than comprehensiveness.

What is AI citation and why does it matter?

AI citation occurs when an AI engine includes your brand, content, or URL as a source in its generated response. Citations matter because they represent discovery, consideration, and trust.

Research shows AI-referred traffic converts at 2 to 5 times the rate of organic search traffic, and brands cited by AI see an average 156% lift in branded search volume (OBA PR, 2026). Citations determine which brands enter buyer consideration sets before any website visit occurs.

Frameworks and methodology

What is the CORE-EEAT framework?

CORE-EEAT is CheckMarque's proprietary 80-point page-level framework that measures whether a single page is optimized for both AI citation and Google ranking. It extends Google's E-E-A-T with four dimensions: Content Quality, Optimisation and Structure, Relevance and Consistency, and Entity Recognition.

Each page receives both a GEO Score (what AI needs to cite) and an SEO Score (what Google needs to rank). This dual scoring reveals the gap between ranking visibility and citation visibility.

What is the CITE framework?

CITE is CheckMarque's proprietary 40-point domain-level framework that measures whether your entire domain is trustworthy as a source for AI and search engines. It evaluates four dimensions: Citation Signals, Identity and Recognition, Trust Indicators, and Eminence and Authority.

CITE measures domain-level trust while CORE-EEAT measures page-level citation-worthiness.

Read the methodology →
Why do I need both CORE-EEAT and CITE?

CORE-EEAT measures page-level citation-worthiness. CITE measures domain-level authority. You can have perfectly optimized pages on a domain with weak authority. AI engines will not cite you because they do not trust your domain.

Conversely, you can have strong domain authority with poorly structured content. AI engines trust your brand but cannot extract usable information. Both must be optimized. Domain authority gets you in the retrieval set. Page optimization gets you cited.

What is a GEO Score vs an SEO Score?

Your GEO Score measures how well a page is optimized for AI citation, averaging Content Quality, Optimisation, Relevance, and Entity Recognition. Your SEO Score measures how well a page is optimized for Google ranking, averaging Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trust signals.

A high SEO Score with a low GEO Score means you rank well but AI engines do not cite you. The ideal page scores high on both.

Implementation and execution

What does a GEO programme include?

A comprehensive GEO programme includes three deliverables: a diagnostic audit (120-point page-level and domain-level analysis with competitive benchmarking), a prioritized 90-day action plan with effort and impact scores explaining what to fix and why, and implementation-ready assets such as schema markup, meta tags, content briefs, and FAQ sections.

Unlike monitoring tools that show problems, programmes provide roadmaps and assets to fix them.

Do I need to hire developers or can my marketing team implement GEO?

Most GEO implementation can be handled by a competent marketing team or content manager. Schema markup requires basic HTML knowledge or a plugin for most CMS platforms. Content restructuring is editorial work. Meta tag optimization is standard SEO practice.

Some initiatives like complex schema implementation or site-wide technical audits benefit from developer support. A properly designed GEO programme identifies what the marketing team can handle versus what needs developer time.

What is the difference between a GEO programme and a monitoring tool?

Monitoring tools track whether your brand appears in AI answers. They show you the problem: citation gaps, competitive share of voice, visibility trends. A GEO programme tells you what to fix, why it matters, and how to fix it.

Monitoring is diagnostic. A programme is prescriptive. Monitoring tools are valuable for ongoing tracking, but they do not replace the strategic roadmap.

How long until I see my brand appearing in ChatGPT answers?

Initial technical improvements such as schema markup and content restructuring can show results within 2 to 4 weeks as AI crawlers re-index your site. Authority-building efforts such as earning citations from reputable sources and building knowledge graph presence typically take 3 to 6 months to compound.

The exact timeline depends on your starting position. If you already rank well on Google and have strong domain authority, GEO optimization surfaces faster. Most businesses see first citations within 60 to 90 days of implementing a comprehensive programme, with citation frequency increasing progressively over 6 months.

ROI and business impact

What is the ROI of GEO?

AI-referred traffic converts at 2 to 5 times the rate of traditional organic traffic, according to Washington Post and Conductor research. Brands cited by AI see an average 156% lift in branded search volume (OBA PR, 2026). Ahrefs found AI referral traffic accounts for 12.1% of signups despite representing only 0.5% of traffic: a 24x conversion efficiency advantage.

If AI traffic does not always click through to my site, why does GEO matter?

AI citation changes the consideration funnel. Research shows that being cited by AI increases branded search volume by 156% on average. Buyers who learn about your brand in ChatGPT later search for you directly on Google, visit your site directly, or research you on review platforms.

AI citations drive downstream awareness even when they do not drive immediate clicks. Additionally, the traffic that does click through converts at 2 to 5 times higher rates because these users are further along in their research journey.

How does GEO affect my sales cycle?

When B2B buyers research vendors in ChatGPT and your brand is cited with authoritative information, they arrive at sales already educated. Forrester's 2025 survey found 61% of the B2B buying journey completes before vendor contact.

Being cited during that phase means entering consideration sets before sales conversations begin. G2's March 2026 research found 69% of buyers chose a different vendor than initially planned based on AI chatbot guidance.

Sources: Forrester 2025 · G2 March 2026
Is GEO worth it for small businesses or only for enterprise brands?

GEO disproportionately benefits smaller, specialist businesses. Enterprise brands often benefit from existing domain authority and brand recognition, which gives them baseline AI visibility even with weak GEO. Smaller businesses competing in underserved niches can outperform enterprise competitors by owning clearly defined topics, demonstrating deep expertise, and structuring content for AI extractability.

AI engines do not automatically favor large brands. They favor clear, authoritative, structured content.

What happens if I do not invest in GEO?

You become progressively invisible during the research phase as more buyers shift to AI-first search behavior. 73% of B2B buyers already use AI tools for vendor research. 51% of B2B software buyers begin their purchasing process in an AI chatbot. These percentages are growing.

If your competitors invest in GEO and you do not, they occupy the citation positions you should own. AI models retrain on what exists online, so competitors who optimize today become embedded in future model knowledge while you remain absent.

CheckMarque services and pricing

What does CheckMarque deliver?

CheckMarque delivers a comprehensive GEO programme in three parts. First, a 120-point diagnostic audit covering page-level optimization (CORE-EEAT framework: 80 points) and domain-level authority (CITE framework: 40 points), including competitive AI citation benchmarking. Second, a prioritized 90-day action plan with P0 to P3 initiatives, effort and impact scores, and clear rationale for what to fix and why. Third, implementation-ready assets: pre-written schema markup, optimized meta tags, content briefs, FAQ templates, and competitive analysis.

You receive the complete roadmap and tools to execute, not just diagnosis.

Does CheckMarque offer monitoring?

Yes. CheckMarque includes a monitoring tool, but it becomes valuable only after you have implemented the programme. Here is why the sequence matters. First, you need to understand what is broken (120-point audit), what to fix (90-day action plan), and how to fix it (implementation-ready assets). Once you have executed those fixes and built real AI visibility, monitoring tracks your improvement over time.

After going through our programme, customers want to monitor because they have built something worth tracking. You are measuring progress, not staring at problems you cannot solve. That is when our monitoring tool delivers value.

How is CheckMarque different from GEO monitoring tools?

Monitoring tools like Profound, Gracker, and Otterly track whether your brand appears in AI answers and measure competitive share of voice. They show you the problem. CheckMarque solves the problem. We provide the diagnostic frameworks (CORE-EEAT and CITE), the prioritized action plan explaining what to fix and why, and the implementation-ready assets to execute immediately.

Monitoring tools are dashboards. CheckMarque is the mechanic's repair manual with parts included.

Is CheckMarque an agency or a tool?

Neither. CheckMarque is a programme. We do not operate as a retained agency managing ongoing optimization. We do not sell monitoring software. We deliver a complete diagnostic audit, strategic roadmap, and implementation assets that your team can execute internally or hand to your existing agency or developers.

The deliverable is execution-readiness: you walk away with everything needed to systematically improve AI citation visibility without dependency on ongoing services.

What does a GEO programme typically cost?

Industry pricing for GEO services varies significantly based on scope and delivery model. Diagnostic audits range from €1,500 to €15,000 depending on depth, content volume, and competitive analysis. Monthly retainers for ongoing optimization range from €2,000 to €25,000 depending on content scale, authority-building scope, and monitoring frequency.

CheckMarque pricing is customized based on your audit scope, competitive landscape, and content volume. Contact us for a consultation to discuss your specific needs and receive a tailored proposal.

Why should I invest in GEO now instead of waiting?

AI models retrain on existing online content. Content published today, citations earned today, and structured presence built today all feed into what AI knows and recommends in future model versions. This creates a compounding effect. Early movers get written into model training data while late movers remain absent.

Your competitors who optimize today become embedded in future AI knowledge while you play catch-up indefinitely. The question is not whether to invest in GEO, but whether you optimize while competitive density is low or wait until the market is saturated.

What is the ROI timeline for GEO?

GEO operates on two timelines with different return profiles. Structural improvements (schema markup, content restructuring) can show initial visibility within 2 to 4 weeks as AI engines re-crawl your site. This is tactical ROI. Authority-building initiatives (earning citations, knowledge graph presence, consistent brand mentions) take 3 to 6 months to compound but create permanent competitive advantages. This is strategic ROI.

The businesses that see highest returns view GEO as infrastructure investment, not campaign spend. You are not buying short-term traffic. You are building long-term discoverability that compounds indefinitely.

Can I implement CheckMarque's recommendations myself or do I need an agency?

Most CheckMarque clients implement internally with their existing marketing teams or developers. The programme is designed for execution-readiness. Schema markup comes as copy-paste code. Content briefs provide answer-first structures and quotable statements. Meta tags are pre-written.

The 90-day action plan clearly separates what marketing teams can handle (content restructuring, FAQ sections) from what needs developer support (complex schema, technical audits). If you have a competent marketing team or work with an existing agency, internal implementation is entirely feasible. The value is the strategic blueprint, not the labor.

How do I measure success after implementing a GEO programme?

Measure success across three categories. Direct AI visibility: citation frequency for target queries, competitive share of voice, and citation context (how your brand is described). Downstream brand impact: branded search volume lift (people searching your brand name after AI exposure), direct traffic increase, and social mention velocity. Conversion quality: conversion rate of AI-referred traffic (typically 2 to 5 times higher than organic), deal cycle length for AI-influenced leads, and customer acquisition cost for AI-discovered customers.

Track all three. AI visibility without business impact means optimization without strategy.
